Why Referenzfabrik.H2?
Challenges
Hydrogen technologies play a pivotal role in meeting global climate targets. The technology key elements are systems for converting renewable energies into hydrogen (electrolysers) or converting it back into electricity (fuel cells), and both are currently being produced in small quantities. However, in order to consistently reduce CO₂ emissions and build a global hydrogen-based economy and society, their availability must be ensured as well as their costs must be significantly reduced.
To accomplish that, industrial mass production is required, which in turn is not conceivable without value creation networks and new production technologies. Thus, there is an urgent need to develop high-rate production systems in a timely manner. Moreover, it must be possible to consolidate the companies in order to integrate their core competencies into the process chain for hydrogen system production.
Referenzfabrik.H2 addresses all these challenges and transforms them into solutions and opportunities for a large number of enterprises from different sectors and of different sizes.

We create cost parity for hydrogen systems
Guiding principle
Purpose:
We make hydrogen systems competitive by supporting innovation, climate protection and the energy transition.
Vision:
Reduction of production costs for H2 systems:
Mission:
As an outstanding innovator and prominent hub for industry, research and society, we develop new solutions for the upscaling of industrial mass production of hydrogen systems and their utilization.
Goals
The Referenzfabrik.H2 focuses on creating conditions for the industrial mass production of hydrogen systems. The ultimate goal is to enable cost-efficient, high-rate production of electrolyzers and fuel cells.
Emphasis is placed on the development of new solutions for a substantial increase in H2 systems output combined with cost reductions, maintaining sustainability of production in perspective.
