H2GP – World Finals

At the Hydrogen Grand Prix World Finals in Chemnitz from August 21 to 27, 2025, 60 teams competed against each other with hydrogen-powered mini race cars. The participants optimized their vehicles in the Sprint, Stock, Hybrid, and Prototype categories and completed numerous laps on the 80-meter track.

The goal of the racing series is to get young people excited about hydrogen technology and sustainable mobility. During the six-hour race, the teams had to efficiently swap out their hydrogen cartridges in order to complete as many laps as possible.

In addition to the competition, there was a diverse supporting program featuring guided tours of the Fraunhofer IWU and Chemnitz University of Technology, interactive exhibits, and presentations by companies such as BMW and Toyota. High-ranking guests such as Minister of State Conrad Clemens, Chemnitz Mayor Ralph Burghart, BMW’s Head of Sustainability Dr. Stefan Fenchel, and the Executive Director of Fraunhofer IWU Prof. Dr. Welf-Guntram Drossel were also in attendance.

The event was a striking demonstration of the younger generation’s spirit of inquiry and enthusiasm for technology!
